Check the owner’s manual to see if your driving habits are considered to be “severe service.” This type of driving requires more frequent oil changes, warns the Car Care Council. Have the oil changed accordingly, usually every 3-5,000 miles. For less wear and tear on the engine, drivers in cold climates (sub-zero driving temperatures) should drop their oil weight from 10-W30 to 5-W30.

Tire rotation refers to the regular practice of switching the position of each tire on the car. Tire rotation helps to equalize tread wear and is critical to gain the maximum life from your tire investment.

The brake system is actually composed of two kinds of systems—Hydraulics and Friction Materials. If you’re hearing unusual sounds when you brake or if your brake pedal is feeling squishy or too hard, have us do a disc brake inspection for you. We’ll tell you if there’s something wrong and what it’ll take to get your brakes all fixed up.

Often confused with wheel alignment, a properly balanced wheel is a beautiful, perfectly tuned wheel-tire combination. This is accomplished by placing measured lead weights on the opposite side of the “heavy spot”—the noticeable tread wear on your unbalanced tire.

“How do I know if I need my wheels balanced?”
Is your vehicle vibrating at certain speeds, say, between 50 and 70 mph? If so, chances are your wheel is out of balance. Come in for prompt, professional service—people are very satisfied with the difference such a simple and inexpensive procedure makes. Look for these signs, and if you find either one, schedule an appointment online or call 614.833.0792 for an appointment and come see us.

Exposure to heat, vibration and contamination makes belts and hoses wear out faster than any other components in your car. That’s why regular inspections are so important. Here are the belt and hose types in your car, along with their applications.

Many vehicle manufacturers recommend having the engine coolant/antifreeze replaced periodically. Our Coolant System Flush service can take care of this by completely flushing the system and refilling it with fresh coolant.

●Flush system & recover old antifreeze
●Refill with required amount of coolant (up to 2 gallons)

Our Heating & Cooling System Services include the following components:

●Radiator hoses

●Water pump
●Thermostat
●Serpentine & fan belts
●Cooling sensor

Avoid unnecessary repair and parts costs! We have the latest in computerized diagnostic equipment, a computerized information system and experienced ASE Master Certified Technicians who are trained to properly care for your vehicle. Our computer diagnostics can save you money by correctly diagnosing your vehicle’s problems right from the start.

Your radiator protects your engine and air conditioning condenser from overheating. It also plays an important role with the computer controlled system. An engine temperature sensor actually tells the computer what the engine temperature is so the computer can adjust the air and fuel mixture and engine timing. The efficiency of the radiator directly effects the efficiency of your engine.

That’s why flushing the cooling system and pH balancing the coolant is recommended at least once every two years.

Our coolant system power flush continuously forces fluid under pressure through the engine, radiator and heater core in both directions at different times to remove contaminates. We pressure test the cooling system for leaks, clean the recovery bottle and pressure test the radiator cap. The system is then refilled with the proper mix of coolant and water to reach the -35 degrees for winter protection.

Addressing early problems can save on more extensive repairs down the road. For instance, a common failure is the clutch that turns the compressor on and off. If you can take care of a bad A/C clutch when it first starts having problems, you may be able to save the compressor. Wait too long and you’ll have to replace both.

Check your owner’s manual or ask your Central Ohio service advisor at Hoffman Auto Repair for service recommendations. And if you’re hearing strange sounds when your air conditioning turns on, or if it just isn’t as cold as it used to be, have Hoffman Auto Repair see what it’ll take to keep you cool.

If you’ve noticed your car acting up lately, or it’s time for one of your regularly scheduled maintenance services, bring your car to Hoffman Auto Repair in Canal Winchester Ohio.

Do you hear strange sounds like knocking or grinding? Have you begun to notice fluids leaking underneath your car? Is it time for your inspection or tune up? We can help if your car won’t start.

“No matter how well you treat your vehicle, car batteries still wear out every few years and need to be replaced. It’s just one of those regular maintenance items we deal with as car owners.” Let one of our Master Certified Technicians help you replace your battery today!

Your car should receive a tune-up (often referred to as a “major service”) every two years or 30,000 miles, whichever comes first. During this tune-up your car will receive some new parts that will hopefully keep it out of the shop for a while. Here’s what needs to be done.

Instructions:

1. Replace the fuel filter.

2. Change the spark plugs (unless they’re platinum, in which case you have 30,000 more miles to go). Also examine the spark plug wires and replace as needed. A new set of high-quality wires is worth the cost. They may be permanently attached to the distributor cap, so it will have to be changed as well.

3. Replace the distributor cap and rotor if your car has them (some newer models with distributorless ignition don’t).

It’s Cold, Is Your Car Ready?

We are knee deep in cold weather. Be sure you car or truck has been properly maintained for winter driving. It’s never too late to get your maintenance up to date. Make it happen.

Bring your car or light truck into Hoffman Auto Repair and let us take a look at it to help you avoid any potential expensive problems that might strand you this winter.

If you want to live a long life – you routinely go to the doctor’s office do what they recommend and with a little luck you will have a long life. The same holds true for your vehicle. This is what we call Preventative Maintenance. If you want your vehicle to have a long and healthy life you have to maintain it on a regular basis.

The following is a list of some key areas requiring preventative maintenance. Consult your owner’s manual for information about when to replace specific fluids and components: Change oil regularly, Monitor all fluids, Maintain transmission, Change spark plugs as required, Watch the timing belt, Flush the radiator, Change all filters, Combat rust, Maintain good driving habits.

A scheduled maintenance will keep your car running longer and stronger.

You should follow your recommended service intervals by the auto manufactures. These intervals are usually 30,000 miles, 60,000 miles, 90,000 miles, and so on, but each manufacture has their own guidelines. Make sure you look at your vehicle service guide that came with your vehicle, or simply drive into Hoffman Auto Repair and ask any of our professionally trained staff to lookup this information for you.

With the amount of money you have invested in your car, doesn’t it make sense to protect it? At Hoffman we think so, because keeping up with scheduled maintenance adds life to your investment.

Keep an eye out for these common signs that you may need new tires or service. If your vehicle exhibits any of these symptoms, take it to Hoffman Auto Repair.

  • When driving, your car pulls to one side or the other.
  • You notice rhythmic vibrations.
  • Your tires are wearing unevenly.
  • Your tires won’t maintain proper air pressure.
  • Shakes at Highway Speed
  • Low speed wobble in wheel

Early automatic transmissions had just two speeds. Now modern automatic transmissions have up to eight speeds. These sophisticated transmissions often match the fuel economy and performance of a manual transmission. Some require special transmission fluid formulas. We’ll make sure you get the right type for your vehicle. Give us a call at 614.833.0792 and let us help keep you safely and economically on the road.

If you smell exhaust in the vehicle, roll down your windows and get it inspected. You may smell or see exhaust coming from the engine compartment or under the vehicle if you have a leak. Sometimes the sound from an exhaust leak is loud and obvious. Sometimes it’s a ticking sound when you start the engine that goes away as you drive. That could be a small crack or a bad fitting that leaks when it’s cold but seals up when the metal heats and expands.

If you see, smell or hear exhaust anywhere but the tailpipe, get an auto inspection right away. Call Hoffman Auto Repair at 614.833.0792 or Schedule an appointment online and help keep yourself safely and economically on the road.

One way to evaluate your need for new shocks or struts is to consider how your vehicle has been handling and riding lately. Does it bounce excessively when driving on rough roads or after hitting a bump? Does the nose dip when braking? Does the body roll or sway excessively when cornering or driving in crosswinds? Does the suspension bottom out when backing out of the driveway or when hauling extra passengers or weight?

Because shocks and struts have so much to do with the handling of a car, they can be considered critical safety features. Worn shocks and struts can allow excessive vehicle-weight transfer from side to side and front to back. This reduces the tire’s ability to grip the road, as well as handling and braking performance

An automotive charging system is made up of three major components: the battery, the voltage regulator and an alternator. The alternator works with the battery to generate power for the electrical components of a vehicle, like the interior and exterior lights, and the instrument panel. An alternator gets its name from the term alternating current (AC).

This is often misdiagnosed as a bad battery, especially if it’s an older battery, but you can save time and a further hassle by having your car serviced correctly by out trained mechanics. Bring your car or truck to our shop just Southeast of Columbus in Canal Winchester Ohio for alternator replacement that you can trust.

The primary function of your cars suspension and steering systems is to allow the wheels to move independently of the car, while keeping it “suspended” and stable. Any play or uncontrolled motion in these systems results in a deterioration of handling and accelerated tire wear. Vehicle alignment is closely tied to the condition of the suspension and steering systems.

It’s easy to take your suspension system for granted, but normal wear and tear can affect your handling and safety. A worn suspension part starts a chain reaction that stresses other parts and causes them – and your tires – to wear prematurely. Let us help you take care of your suspension.

Vehicle alignment is closely tied to the condition of the suspension and steering systems.

Worn or loose components affect the ability to control the toe angle, and may result in a loss of directional stability and accelerated tire wear. The main components of car suspension and steeringa Conventional system are:

1. Steering Gear Box

2. Center Link

3. Pitman Arm

4. Idler Arm

5. Tie Rods

The main components of a Rack and Pinion steering system are:

6. Rack and Pinion Assembly

7. Bellows Boots

8. Tie Rods

Since you purchased your new vehicle, dirt, varnishes and carbon deposits have been forming on the fuel injectors, valves, combustion chamber, throttle housing and the air induction intake. These build ups can rob your vehicle of performance, and if left untreated, these build ups can lead to costly repairs.

Symptoms related to carbon build up are:

  • engine pinging
  • hesitation
  • poor acceleration
  • lack of power
  • hard starting and stalling
  • rough idle
  • poor fuel economy

Our Fuel System Cleaning is a revolutionary new process that will clean your vehicle’s fuel system and remove harmful carbon deposits. Our system uses a detergent that soaks into the carbon, and softens it, so while running through the process the deposits are passed through the exhaust. The solution will not damage your vehicle’s sophisticated engine components.
After our Fuel System Cleaning cleans your engine, you will notice improved performance, acceleration and increased fuel economy. Let one of our ASE certified technicians perform this service for you today.
